Hi, I’m Julia Luz Betancourt.

I’m an investigative journalist, editor and multimedia creator covering how communities organize against abuses of power.

I grew up in a segregated suburb on Long Island, New York. From a young age, writing has helped me interrogate the systems we live under. Through my reporting, I aim to spark dialogue on what it takes to change those systems.

My stories have highlighted the risks of universities collaborating with immigration enforcement, uncovered instances of political repression of pro-Palestine student activists, and revealed a surveillance technology company’s financial ties to the Trump administration.

My stories can be found in BreakThrough News, Prism, YES! Magazine, Truthout, the Latin Times, LA Progressive, GEN-ZiNE and more. I have managed social media and newsletters for The Margin, YES! Media, the Financial Times and Counterstream Media, where I am the Assistant Editor.

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies from St. John’s University.
