Julia Luz Betancourt is an independent multimedia journalist, editor and audience expert who covers how communities organize against abuses of power. Her reporting deeply examines the systems we live under and sparks dialogue on what it takes to change them.
Julia is the former associate editor of YES! Media, where she covered the struggle to end sexual violence in the era following #metoo, the art and culture arm of the movement for Palestinian liberation, and how student activists are resisting repression from the Trump administration. Her work has appeared in YES! Magazine, Truthout, the Latin Times, LA Progressive, GEN-ZiNE, Scheerpost and Z Network. She has also been a guest on the nationwide broadcast program, Rising Up With Sonali.
Julia believes journalism can bring about justice and works to amplify narratives that are underreported. In 2022, she published a zine on injustice in education after investigating food insecurity at her alma mater. She recently launched her own newsletter, ANTAGONiSTIC, on Substack.
Julia received a B.S. in Journalism and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies from St. John’s University. She is a member of BreakThrough News' national grassroots media network and has presented for the Solutions Journalism Network.
